Fall HVAC Maintenance Checklist

Fall is finally here! Time to put away your summer clothes and break out the sweatshirts, jackets, and boots for the upcoming colder months. You are going to be ready for fall, but is your furnace?

Even if everything was hunky-dory during the spring and summer, the fall and winter put a whole new set of demands on your HVAC system, particularly your furnace. Fall HVAC maintenance is an important part of seasonal preparation and can help make sure you get through the season without any nasty surprises.

While the weather is still relatively mild, now is the perfect time to have fall HVAC maintenance done around the house. Here are a couple of important items to make sure get checked off your list this fall.

Clear off your HVAC unit

If your HVAC unit is outside, chances are it has gotten pretty dirty and cluttered with debris over the summer. Any sticks, leaves, twigs, grass, and dirt that may have gathered on your HVAC system can block airflow and reduce your heating and cooling efficiency.

The weather is cooling and much more mild, so now is a great time to clear anything off of it. However, if your HVAC unit is anywhere near trees, you’ll want to keep an eye on it all autumn long as leaves and sticks continue to fall.

Take your furnace for a test drive

If you have gone through all of spring and summer without having to turn on your furnace, you may really have no idea what kind of condition your furnace is in. Just because it was working fine at the tail end of last winter doesn’t necessarily mean everything is going to be perfect when you fire it up again this year during the first big chill. Letting your furnace have a test run now gives you a chance to catch any irregularities or issues that may have developed during its inactivity this past season early on.

Replace your filter

Regularly replacing the air filter on your air conditioner and furnace is one of the easiest and most impactful ways to keep your home’s air quality pure and improve the lifespan of your system. A dirty filter makes it harder to circulate air and the air it does circulate can become tainted by the dirt, dust, and dander that has built up on the filter.

Even if you replaced your filter at the beginning of summer, it is a good habit to replace your filter every couple of months. This makes the beginning of fall the perfect time to swap out your filter for a new clean one to start the season.

Have your furnace looked at

Even if all systems seem good when you give your furnace an early test, nothing is better for your furnace than regular preventative maintenance. Having a trained HVAC expert come out to take a look at your furnace before you get too deep into fall can ensure that any issues you may have overlooked are found and addressed quickly.

At the very least, the TLC your furnace gets makes sure everything is working properly and cleaned thoroughly to help extend its lifespan. Preventative service plans, like Comfort Guard offered by Breedlove Dobbs, help make this process easy and affordable to make a regular part of your fall preparation.

Clean your air ducts

Fall and winter mean more time spent inside your home. With fewer opportunities to let fresh air into your home, the quality of your in-home air is going to be even more important over the next few months. One way to improve the quality of your home’s air is by having your ducts cleaned.

You would be surprised at just how much dirt and dust can gather in your ducts, and when you fire up your furnace it just blows all those allergens and irritants into the air for you to breathe. Getting your ducts cleaned is a good service to have done every couple of years, so if it has been a while since you’ve had them cleaned, fall is the perfect time to have it done.
