Smoke Detectors and Safety
Smoke detectors are a necessity in each and every home not only in Indianapolis but across the country. These systems alert anyone in your home to the presence of smoke and fire so that anyone inside can quickly and safely exit and call for help. They are a necessary safety device that help prevent countless deaths each year and no home should be without them.
1. Prevent fire-related injury
Keep your family safe! 3 out of 5 home fire deaths occur in homes without working detectors. Installing the necessary number of detectors in your home can help prevent very preventable injury or death by alerting you the moment a threat becomes present.
2. Where should smoke detectors be installed?
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends that every home should have one installed on each story of the home and that one be installed in each bedroom for optimal coverage and safety against smoke and fire related injury or death. This helps ensure that you will be quickly alerted to danger no matter where you are in your home or even if you are sleeping.
3. How often do smoke detectors need to be replaced?
The NFPA recommends replacing all smoke detectors every ten years to keep your family as safe as possible. It is also recommended that you check your home’s detectors at least once per month to make sure they are functioning properly and do not need batteries replaced. You should replace batteries at least twice per year for optimal safety.
