As seasons change, our thoughts turn to pumpkin spice lattes, hayrides and bonfires spent with friends and family. With these changes, it’s pretty certain that cooler temperatures are not far behind. But, living in Indiana, we all know that cooler weather isn’t the only thing that Old Man Winter brings in his path. That’s why it’s important to be prepared for what lies ahead. Part of that preparation includes knowing what to do so winter doesn’t blitz your home.

A couple weeks ago, we discussed important considerations for choosing the right furnace. Now, we’re going one step further by offering our list of everyday things you and your family can be doing now, so that winter doesn’t sneak up on you.

Chim, chimany

We all have a sense of pride when it comes to taking care of our property. But, did you know that in addition to curb appeal, pride also comes with handling what’s part of your home’s structure? By this, we mean, it’s time to check and clean your chimney. If you’re planning to build fires this winter for added warmth and relaxation, make sure your chimney is clear of any soot or other hazardous debris. Having this done will help you and your loved ones enjoy the best of winter.

Maintain your furnace

In addition to checking and cleaning you chimney, you should also schedule routine maintenance on your furnace. Fall is the perfect time to have your furnace inspected and cleaned, and your filters replaced. This service takes less than two hours on average, and costs little compared to the comfort it brings.

Invest in energy

With the trend being greener these days, everyone wants to know they are getting the best deals on home appliances and knowing they’re also being kind to Mother Earth. One of the best ways to do both is to invest in a home energy audit where a licensed professional comes to your home to conduct an assessment that will help you learn where to save money. According to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Weatherization Assistance Program, a home energy audit can help make your home more comfortable and energy-efficient.

Another, more elementary option to consider for conserving energy is by protecting doors and windows. In addition to purchasing inexpensive weather stripping to keep out drafts, you can invest in a cushion to block door cracks, and plastic shrink-wrap for windows. It’s not the prettiest, but it works.

Breathe easy,

With seasonal changes, it’s a good time to check that your carbon monoxide detectors are working. The easiest way to know is by changing out old batteries. We cannot stress the importance of having an operational carbon monoxide detector because with the gas being colorless and odorless, it can be harmful to your health, but the good news is, the negative effects are preventable.

Invest in an upgrade

Finally, consider upgrading your furnace. Many newer furnaces are ENERGY STAR-rated and can save up to 40 percent on your utility bills.
